Birth Of A Family

By Trevor Vale

Having married in September 1962 my wife and I having decided that we wanted children also decided that it wasn’t the most urgent priority. We decided that we wanted two children ideally a son and a daughter. Having practiced for nine months my wife’s maternal instinct took over and her need of a son became apparent.

Our first child a daughter was born in June 1964 a welcome addition to our lives although a great disappointment to my wife who right through the pregnancy convinced herself it was a son and had already decided his name would be Kenneth.

Having finally fought off the disappointment the time came to try again to get a son that would make up the perfect family as far as we were concerned and our second child, another daughter, was born in March 1966. At this time my wife was devastated and decided that it was not to be and felt our family was in-complete.

In May 1966 we all emigrated to Australia to start a new life for us all. After a couple of years and having settled down in our new country and having got a good job with a very good salary our thoughts turned to trying one more time for a son.

In September 1969 our third child arrived and finally we got our son which as you can imagine made my wife very happy. Whether the change of luck was the law of averages or whether it was because of our new found wealth along with the laid back lifestyle or the weather we will never know but it didn’t matter as we now had our complete family.

Over the next three or four years we moved around Australia with my job receiving a promotion each time. By this time my wife was feeling the balance of the family was wrong two girls and one boy so wanted to start again.

In May 1973 our fourth child arrived, thankfully another boy which balanced the family nicely and hopefully the end of further populating Australia. Unfortunately for us we lost everything we possessed in Cyclone Tracy that hit Darwin on Christmas Day 1974 although fortunately we were on holiday in UK at the time but meant we never returned to Australia.

You might think that this is the end of family story but no because in December 1977 our fifth and final child arrived again another son. You may remember it all started with my wife wanting a son called Kenneth the strange thing is our sons are called David, Robert and Peter.
